Papakolea: Hawaii's Olivine Green Sand Beach at South Point
At the southern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, past the wind-scoured cattle pastures beyond Ka Lae, a small bay cuts into a weathered volcanic cliff and reveals a beach the color of dull olive glass. Papakolea, widely known as Green Sand Beach or Mahana Bay, owes its unusual hue to olivine, a volcanic mineral eroding out of the cinder cone that rises behind it. It is one of only a handful of green sand beaches recognized anywhere in the world, and reaching it still requires a dusty, wind-battered walk along an old ranch road. Olivine: the mineral behind the color
The green in the sand comes from olivine, a magnesium iron silicate that crystallizes deep within basaltic magma before it ever reaches the surface. When lava rich in olivine erupts and cools, the mineral is left embedded in the resulting volcanic rock as small, glassy grains. Gem-quality olivine is known as peridot, and the same mineral that gives Papakolea its color is sold in jewelry stores under that name. Most Hawaiian beaches are either black, built from fragments of basalt and volcanic glass, or white, built from coral and shell debris ground down by the surf. Papakolea is neither: it is a concentration of olivine crystals that have been sorted out from the surrounding volcanic debris by the constant work of waves.
Up close, the sand at Papakolea is a mix rather than a pure mineral bed. Look closely at a handful and you will find olivine grains ranging from deep bottle green to a paler yellow-green, sitting alongside darker fragments of basalt, black volcanic glass, and occasional white bits of coral carried in from elsewhere along the coast. The overall color the beach appears from a distance depends on how much of that lighter volcanic material has been washed away relative to the denser olivine, which is why the shade can look more or less vivid depending on where you stand and how recently the surf has reworked the sand.
Photographs of Papakolea often exaggerate the green tone with editing, which can leave first-time visitors slightly surprised by how muted the color looks in person under overcast skies. Direct midday sun and a splash of seawater both tend to bring out the color most vividly, since wet olivine grains catch the light differently than dry sand does. Visitors who arrive expecting a uniform emerald carpet are usually met instead with a mottled, speckled surface, closer to army-green in places, that rewards a closer look rather than a quick glance from the clifftop above.
A cinder cone called Puu Mahana
The bay sits at the base of Puu Mahana, a volcanic cone built up during an eruption linked to Mauna Loa's activity in this part of the island. When rising basaltic magma met the sea, the interaction produced a littoral cone made of layered ash, cinder, and volcanic fragments, including olivine crystals carried up from deep in the mantle along with the erupting lava. Over a very long span of time, ocean waves attacking the exposed, seaward wall of the cone eventually breached it, carving out the amphitheater-shaped bay visitors see today. The cliffs that curve around Papakolea are essentially a cross-section of that old cone, their layered ash and cinder deposits still visibly eroding into the water.
Why the sand keeps its color
Papakolea stays green because of an ongoing, dynamic process rather than a fixed deposit of colored sand. As waves batter the cliffs, they release olivine crystals along with lighter volcanic glass and ash. Olivine is notably denser than these other materials, so as the surf works the beach, the lighter fragments wash away or grind down further while the heavier olivine grains settle and accumulate. The result is a shoreline where olivine makes up a much larger share of the sand than it would if erosion simply dumped cliff material onto the beach untouched. It also means the beach is not static: continued erosion of the cone feeds the supply, and the balance of color can shift somewhat with the seasons and the strength of incoming surf.
Ka Lae, the southernmost point in the United States
Papakolea sits close to Ka Lae, more commonly called South Point, the southernmost point of the Big Island and of all fifty American states. Ka Lae has long been significant in Hawaiian history and is thought to be one of the first landing places reached by Polynesian voyagers who settled the islands, arriving by canoe across open ocean. Old mooring holes carved into the rocks along the point are still visible, believed to have been used to secure canoes against the strong current and near-constant wind that sweep past this exposed corner of the island. Wind turbines line parts of this stretch of coastline today, a nod to how consistently the trade winds sweep across South Point year round, the same winds that once filled the sails and powered the paddling of voyaging canoes. That steady wind, paired with rich offshore fishing grounds fed by nutrient-bearing currents, is part of why this remote corner of the island has remained continuously significant to local communities long after the first Polynesian settlers arrived.
The hike out to the beach
Getting to Papakolea takes some effort. Visitors turn off the main highway onto South Point Road and follow it down toward the coast, then continue on foot along a rough dirt track that runs roughly two and a half miles each way across open, grassy terrain with essentially no shade. The wind here can be relentless, and the sun is strong, so the walk is best done with water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Some local drivers offer paid rides partway along the track in pickup trucks, though travelers should weigh the informal nature of that arrangement carefully. Near the end of the route, the trail descends a steep, eroded slope into the bay itself, where the green sand becomes visible against the dark cliff walls for the first time.
Swimming and safety at Papakolea
The cove offers some shelter from the open ocean swells that pound the rest of South Point, but conditions inside the bay can still change quickly, and there is no lifeguard on duty. Currents can be strong, particularly when swell picks up, and the seabed near the cliffs includes exposed rock that calls for caution when entering or exiting the water. Calm summer days tend to offer the safest swimming conditions, but visitors should always assess the water before going in and avoid swimming alone in such a remote location.
